"Erez will not take you to a place; he will introduce you to the soul of the place and it will make your spirit soar.

Carl A. Hammerschlag, M.D. , Arizona

I, like many people, had my own preconceptions of the desert. I presumed the tour would involve battle against the harsh, hostile elements that the desert is renowned for and that the stark landscape would offer little if any variation from day to day. I chose to do that tour, more than anything else, because I wanted a challenge and because although remote and seemingly inaccessible, the depths of Sinai are relatively convenient to reach. My tour began at the En Hudra oasis and within minutes of arriving all my preconceptions was shattered. The sun had just set and the sky was a blaze of colour, a thousand shades of orange, purple and red were strewn overhead, while the sand and mountains shared in the glory by changing their hues gently but deeply. I had stood there for barely ten minutes and in that time without even moving my head I had seen the landscape change fantastically, it was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen in my life. We had arrived late and the Bedouin with whom we were to travel invited us to spend the night at their camp. They loaded their camels with our bags and we rode through the sand in the twighlight to their camp. I had never before experienced such stillness and calmness as on that first evening, miles and miles of space, silence and peace, but it was not harsh, it was enthralling. As we reached their camp the Bedouin children ran to greet us, laughing and excited they helped us to unload our things. Within the tents the women were busily preparing the evenings meal while the men brewed tea on the fire. At first glance I felt the Bedouin's life to be hard and basic but I soon realised that, unlike me, they are not crippled by petty wants, they have all they need and are content, whereas I have more than I need and am not. During the following days the deserts beauty engulfed me more and more, but the views are not everything, it has such mysterious qualities that I cannot properly describe them. I suppose everybody who experiences the desert does so in his or her own unique way. I will only say that my tour changed not only my perception of deserts, it changed my perception of myself and my life and do I recommend the experience to everybody…….ABSOLUTELY!

Few people really know what the desert is like. In a way what is said is true. The desert is bare, barren and extreme but these truths are deceptive because until you travel there, there is nothing attractive about ‘bare, barren and extreme'. Once you witness it however, in all its naked wonder, these are the things for which you return.
