The Sinai Peninsula is where Asia meets Africa on the Syrian-African Rift. Its geographical diversity, ancient archeological sites, profound Biblical ties and unique Nomadic Tribal Culture offer a fascinating intellectual and spiritual encounter. Moreover, the Sinai desert has a unique mysticism it is here that the perceptive traveler feels and sees the majestic force of nature. Pilgrims who reached this desert in centuries past declared it to be their nearest encounter with God. In this vast land the only people between you and the distant horizon are the solitary Bedouin, journeying between camps. If at night you should stand upon a summit, between sky and earth, scanning the infinite desert below, its peaks, its dunes, its canyons and its Wadis, you will see occasional flickers of light. These are the Bedouins campfires, scattered sparingly across the landscape as they have for thousands of years. According to Bedouin legend as long as there is one Bedouin campfire left in Sinai, with one pot of tea bubbling over on it, the day of judgement is yet to come. These Bedouin tribes have a unique culture, born of necessity for survival in harsh conditions and of years of isolation from other ethnic tribes and cultures. The Sinai Desert has a diverse geographical structure. The Red granite mountains of the High Range have a relatively high rainfall, therefore the Bedouin 'Jabbelia Tribe' who live there are non-nomadic. Utilizing the year-round water supply for their orchards that are found throughout the picturesque valleys and canyons, they grow fruit, nuts and herbs from which they earn their livelihood. The highest of these mountains is Mt Catherine 2700 meters above sea level, nearby is the 6th Century Saint Catherine's Monastery. The views from these mountains span the whole of the peninsula and often beyond, over the surrounding sea and onto Saudi Arabia in the East and North Africa in the West. The Sandstone Area of Sinai has little rainfall and its delicately eroded Sandstone Mountains and soft sand dunes that are home to the nomadic Tarabin and Mezeina Tribes, these are mainly shepherds who herd their sheep and goats according to food and water sources. The area is rich in sandstone canyons and wadis. Also found here are lush green oasis flowing with spring water, the occasional Bedouin garden, ancient archeological sites and beautiful scenic views. The Eastern Shore of Sinai is where the desert descends into the waters of the Red Sea. This vast and often deserted stretch of coast remains, in unpopulated areas, completely unspoiled. The calm sea is world renowned for its marine life, including spectacularly colorful coral reefs that are host to over 1,000 types of fish. Scuba divers come from all over the world to Sinai, just for the diving. Since many of these reefs begin at, or just below, the surface it is also possible to enjoy them and their wealth of colorful fish just swimming. The Sinai has more recently become known as the Red Sea Riviera and it's popular resorts from Sharm El Sheikh to Taba attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
